2007 Auckland Regional ResultsDrawing crews from as far south as Lakes Rotorua and Ngaroto, Tamaki Yacht Club hosted the regatta in conjunction with the Mistral North Islands 31 March and 1 April 2007 and with one race to go, five boats had a hand on the Burnsco Marine Auckland Phase 2 Championship trophy. Over the weekend, they had light to moderate breezes on the courses set between Bastion Point and Bean Rock. Race one was on a long triangle-windward leeward course with winds at the lighter end of the scale. Crews that picked the sizeable lefthander early stretched out with Adrian and Malcolm from Ngaroto taking a win. On a reset course visitors realised (some faster than others!) the effect of the ebbing tide was having on the right hand side of the course, locals keeping left to avoid a slow slog to mark one. The father/daughter combination of Geoff and Julie Bates from the host club took out first followed by Stephen and Peer from Rotorua. Race three was the final for the day and was won by class stalwarts Bruce and Andrew Davidson, leaving them with a small buffer over Adrian and Malcolm and Geoff and Julie at the conclusion of day one. Sharing a course with the sizeable Mistral fleet meant that the races were start on long lines with plenty of space for everyone. The Tamaki Yacht Club race committee were very diligent in their race management, meaning that the races were true tests of sailing. We are all grateful for their work that enables us to go out sailing. Tight racing at the top of the fleet, so often characteristic of Phase 2 regattas, now meant that minor mistakes would now see boats fall out of contention and the winner would have to sail two near flawless races to clinch the title. Race four began before the tide was in full ebb, allowing the crews to work the shifts and sail towards extra pressure. Murray and Anne Davidson were the fourth combination to get a win in the series which left it open to anyone of 5 boats to clinch the title for 2007. Stephen and Peer sailed a strong race, utilising skills developed on Lake Rotorua to win the final race, elevating them to first equal. Their performances in the previous races were enough to give them the series on countback over Bruce and Andrew Davidson. Adrian and Malcolm wound up third, indicating that these freshwater sailors are at home at sea too. The whole event was held in good nature and was a encouraging precursor to the next National Champs to be held in the same waters in January next year. The resurgence of interest in the class, indicated by the revival of the Auckland Champs and, after a lengthy hiatus, new boats out of the Bonito mould shows that the class is in good health.

PHASE 2 NATIONALS 22-24 January 2005 Evans Bay, WellingtonSponsored by BP Oil and Wellington City Council After two consecutive years with the Nationals held at the Napier Sailing Club, we moved south this year to Evans Bay, which is in Wellington Harbour, just north of the airport. The last time the Nationals were held here was in 2000. We had 18 entries for the 2005 Nationals, with sailors coming mainly from Napier and Wellington, as well as from Wanganui and Rotorua. With a forecast for wind and more wind, we were not too surprised to find ourselves blown out the first day. However, conditions improved and on Sunday the Race Committee started competitors very early and got in 3 races by about 12.30. Races were held at the head of Evans Bay - no swell on Sunday, although it was gusty. Then the wind got up and there was a 3-hour stand down before squeezing in 2 more races at the end of the day. Races were kept short to get the maximum number in, so starts were especially important. During Sunday the wind was around 18 - 20 knots, but varied 13 - 26 knots. Phase 2 sailors handled the conditions well and it was great to see the boats all quite close in some races. Monday the conditions were absolutely perfect - around 15 knots although quite misty at times. We got in 4 races. Ben Goodwin with his Garth father crewing, and two local youth sailors (Jonathan Clough and Carl Syman - in a leased club boat) led the field. Jonathan and Carl slid into second place once the conditions lightened. Not unexpectedly, the Wellington sailors did better on the first day. As the field was led by youth sailors to some extent, the Youth results were not that different from the Line. Meanwhile the Masters was cleaned up by Per Ejlertsen from Napier with tens of points to spare. Per only met his crew on the Friday night - clearly not too much of a handicap for him! On the social side, we had barbeques at the yacht club Friday and Saturday nights and a dinner at a waterfront restaurant near the club Sunday night. We were also joined on one of the chase boats by Major Malhi and Rob Phillips, two crew off the BP Explorer (see www.globalchallenge2004.com) Thank you to the Evans Bay Yacht & Motor Boat Club for such a well run regatta. Special thanks to the Vice Commodore Mike Coupe, to Neil Gibbons and rest of the Race Committee, and to Paul Vautier and his team for the food and liquid refreshments.
